DaveOnFilm says: Shortcut is a very run-of-the-mill type genre piece. 5 kids on a trip get lost after taking a shortcut. Then they coincidentally manage to run into a nutjob on the loose that one of the kids just happened to know about…then the bus breaks down in the middle of a tunnel and all hell breaks loose with some black-garbed plastic-faced looking creature that shrieks and kills people.
Strange creatures in the dark have been done many times…and they have been done much better than they are done here. The creature is dark, very dark, so when we’re in the darkness with it, even shining a torch on it doesn’t reveal much. That said, whenever we do see anything, it’s not that great.
The film isn’t entirely bad. Its creepy in a few places, but then just loses a lot of its credibility. There’s a whole exposition scene when they discover documents of someone who was tracking the thing previously which the film could have really done without, and the climax is somewhat disappointing too.
