Double Tap or Tapped Out?
We are back in Zombieland for our second helping of the Rules, Zombie Kill Of The Year and Nutting up or Shutting up.
Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) return to the big screen a few years on from the last time we saw them. They are settled in the White House and generally making a good life for themselves. Wichita and Columbus are an item whilst Tallahassee is struggling as a father figure for Little Rock.
When Little Rock goes kissing, the other three set off to try to bring her home, running into the kooky Madison (Zoey Deutch) along the way, and after Columbus strikes up a relationship with her, much to the annoyance of Wichita, girlie snipes ensue.
From Safe Havens to shopping malls, this film ticks all the boxes for the Zombie tropes. The mall is a call back to Dawn of the Dead, the safe haven to every zombie outbreak film and TV series ever.
This is where my problems begin though… Nothing felt fresh in this film. Everything felt like a regurgitation of previous ideas from other films. You even have Columbus reading a copy of the Walking Dead comic and commenting on how unrealistic it was.
It is funny though, the addition of more Rules, and then later the commandments when another character is introduced, really works well. Madison is a great addition to the foursome, adding the extra dynamic that the group definitely needed.
The Zombie kills are brilliantly done and its a hell of a lot of fun, but remains very much middle of the road too.
